8 guidelines of web design every designer should know

Web design has its guidelines, just as every creative specialty does. One must make sure that the website design strikes the perfect balance, material, navigation and visuals. But how does one formulate the basic fundamentals of a good design for websites? An efficient web design should fulfill its intended purpose of conveying its sole message while engaging the visitor at the same time. Read on to learn what the basic principles are to designing a website.

Purpose of your website

Your website should meet the user’s needs. It is imperative for a user to be able to connect with what is being offered. A quick and straightforward purpose should be available on all pages when designing a website. Do you offer practical knowledge, such as ‘How to Guide’? Is it a website for entertainment such as sports coverage, or are you offering the consumer a product? There are several distinct uses that websites can have, but all websites have common core uses;

  • Describing your skills
  • Creating a reputation
  • Generation of leads
  • Sales (product web design)

Minimalism

When considering the user interface and the accessibility of your website, minimalism is the best way to go. Mentioned below are a few ways to achieve minimalism:

Color has the ability to connect and elicit emotional reactions to messages. The web design should include a color palette that best suits your brand which will allow you to influence the behavior of your client towards your brand. Keep the hues restricted to less than 5 colors. Harmonizing colors works very well, it should be pleasing to the viewers.

In web design, typography has a major role to play. It demands focus and serves as the voice of the brand’s visual perception. Typefaces should be readable and a maximum of 3 separate fonts should only be used on the website.

Any visual piece used in communications is imagery. This involves photography, graphic art and videos. All imagery should be expressive and capture the business essence and serve as a quintessence of the personality of the brand. A lot of the preliminary information that takes up space on the website is visual and it is imperative to use high-quality images to give a good first impression of competence and reputation in the mind of the viewer.

User-Friendly Website

It is always best to create a website that is easy to navigate through, as it is the way that people connect and locate what they are searching for easily. To keep visitors from leaving your website quickly, easy and prompt navigation is key. Visitors will give up and find what they need elsewhere if the navigation of the websites is frustrating. Keeping navigation on any page simple, innate and regular is essential.

F – Shaped Reading Pattern

The f-shaped pattern helps in increasing conversions. The most common way visitors search text on a website is the F- based pattern. Studies of eye-tracking have shown that much of what people see is in the screen’s top and left fields. In the West (left to right and top to bottom), the F ‘shaped layout mimics our natural reading pattern. An efficient website design can work with a natural page visualization design for readers. If the design is in a half-hazard manner and it is not pleasing to the eyes it could drive the visitor away. Seeing that extensive reading is rare, particularly when possible clients perform their initial research to compile a shortlist of suppliers, maintaining the F-shaped reading pattern is important.

Consequential Content

Having just the right content on your website is a vital part of web design. Your content should always be useful both for your viewers and yourself. Content should be such that keeps your viewers engaged. Both great architecture and great content provide a powerful web design. Great content can attract and influence tourists by turning them into customers using persuasive language.

White space balance

White space, clickable buttons, shapes, textures and other elements of graphic design help images and content to be striking and prevent a design from being chaotic. A significant feature of any practical layout is white space, also known as negative space. The website may become an unclear splotch without it.

Loading time

Another important principle to know when designing a website is the time it takes to load the page. A very heavy website that takes an awfully long time to load could result in a loss of visitors. A website should load within 2 seconds or less on any platform that is being viewed. Improving image sizes will help the website load time.

Platform friendly

Times now have led to people changing their screen time from computers and laptops to their phones and tablets. Browsing websites on these devices has become easy. Henceforth, when designing a website, it is significant to see that the website design is mobile and tablet friendly. Your design should be responsive to viewers on all available platforms.
